Joseph van Bredael was born into a family of painters. At the beginning of the 18th century he received commissions to make copies of great painters of the Golden Age. It was not uncommon for his unsigned works or those bearing only the monogram JB to end up on the art market as originals of Jan Bruegel I or II. In 1725 van Bredael went to Paris, worked there as a copyist of famous masters such as Claude Lorrain or de la Faye and died there in 1739.
